Chimney extension posted on May 15, 2008 03:36:55 pm House appears to have originally been a ranch and then a second floor added.
This chimney extension is not flush with original brick. It is set in and then started sky wards. I can see some cement at the intersection of old and new. They either built it on the old crown or added the concrete to get water away from this shelf.
Anyone know if this is correct construction? Appears to be slight lean in upper chimney. Inspection is tomorrow and I can get a better look then.
Bob? Anyone. Thanks
Ash clean out? posted on May 15, 2008 01:06:36 pm Just want to make sure this is considered an ash clean out. It is an open pipe that enters the bottom of the chimney in the crawlspace. The fireplaces have a metal hinged door in the bottom of the firebox. I have always thought that these were used to sweep ashes into. But then I thought they might possibly be intended for combusion air as well. Could somebody clarify this for me.
Fireplace screens posted on May 15, 2008 12:18:48 am Do most codes require wood burning fireplaces to have fireplace screens or glass doors?. I know that it is a good idea but would like to know if it is required by code.

Insulation clearance to direct vent chimney posted on May 12, 2008 07:45:29 pm I know most metal chimney manufacturers require a 1-2 inch clearance to insulation but I cannot find specifics for the Secure Vent Direct Vent Chimney. It passes throught the wall with a horizontal installation and has fiberglass wall insulation in direct contact. My gut says this isn't right but the manufacturer's installation instructions do not address insulation contact specifically as I have seen with other metal chimney manufacturers. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Eric
