Jeff, being 'adjacent to A/C' has no bearing on whether they need to be GFCI protected or not.

GFCI requirements are based upon the equipment location. While a case may be made for rooftop receptacles, and even crawl space receptacles, to be GFCI ... there is no such requirement for such equipment in mechanical rooms or attics.
