I have some wonderful memories of the place. My Grandmothers farm was on the hillside adjacent to the castle. As a child, I ran through the halls and along the parapets. I also remember the unpaved streets in the outskirts where our favorite hobby was kicking "donkey apples".
Up the hill from where we lived was the bull ring which I went to every weekend during the season. My dad played trombone in the band and one of my uncles was a bull handler.
Lots of fond memories, but, there were also reasons to leave. At the time, circa 1959, the country was under a very repressive dictatorship. Economic and educational advantages/opportunities were the primary reason that my parents decided to emigrate. I had no choice in the matter due to my age (9 yo)
Culture shock would be an understatement when we landed in Newark, NJ. in 1961
