Probably the other good reason was to stow the red conductor and the installer ran out of wire nuts. The additional wire may be intended for future multi-branch circuit wiring and the installer did not have or want to waste a 15 amp 2 pole breaker which would be required for that configuration eventually. In any case, the stowed installation is incorrect. rbj
