Ran across this yesterday. Not sure what it is for. On the outside there was this configuration (photo1) and on the inside a closed loop of pvc pipe (photo 2).

Any ideas? I thought maybe a water softener hook up that is not used but I haven't seen this set-up before.

Any ideas?

Is the gray line teed into the loop or is the sock just holding the open line against the loop?

The sock is just holding the gray line crimped over and against the loop.

It is a heat loop (using the ground and home heat) to keep the faucet from freezing.





OK, OK. It's just a wild thought that popped into my head when I saw the pictures.

Not that wild. :)

That was my first thought too, some type of geo thermal heat loop, then I realized there were too many things 'not right' for that to be the case.

I had to look again and then came up with the filtration/treatment probability.

O.K.

I inspected a one year old house today and found a very similar set-up attached to a water softening system in the garage. Photos 1-2. So back to "Dead on" I guess. :)

I have seen plenty of softener installs but not with this particular set-up.

This one today even had the hose bib and all just like the other.

Todays inspection also had this nice support sytem for a 65 gallon water heater and furnace/evaporator coil combo in a second floor closet! See photo 3. Needless to say, the deck they were resting on was sagging a bit.
