Hopefully not both.

Kirk,

Only one? Generally, there are two covers. One for each tank chamber. At least that is typical around here.

Look's like a septic riser/cleanout...did you pull the cover?

a) Septic cover - sometimes only one cover on old tanks

b) Well cover - possibly well with submersible pump

c) Al Capones hideout

Kirk,

There is another cover that is flush with the ground about 50 feet or so away. It looks similar to this one, but like I said, the cover itself doesn't rise out of the ground. There is also a sewer cover in the yard (it is labeled). I think the house was built in the mid 40's. I don't know if that is pertinent info or not. Most everyone around here is connected to town sewerage. Anyway, thanks for the possibilities.

Rboert, I did not pull the cover. Thankfully, I am not supposed to :)

I have seen them around here in the Foothills for a small septic holding tank with a sump pump that pumps the sewage uphill to the municipal sewer lines

Hi
I believe that this is a well cover - after I read the rest of your info. The other cover, level to the ground is probably for a "dry well" (grey water) & would require regular cleaning to remove the soap layer. The lid labeled Septic is for the sludge type of septic only. It used to be quite common for "dry wells" to be used for grey water.

If it is a well and there might be septic tank 50 feet from this cover.
Tell the buyer "DON'T DRINK THE WATER".
A water well should be at least 100 feet from a septic tank.
