Does anyone have any recommendations for repairs to this type of damage at siding. This looks like hardboard but could actually be some kind of cement epoxy mix. Siding is very hard and water penetration appears to have minimal effect.

Replacement with HardieBoard would be the best solution. Once it starts blowing up like that from moisture it's hard to stop.

Hardiplank requires 2 inch clearance between roofing and bottom edge of siding. I have seen it in same shape as Wayne's pic.

Looks like roofing hammer damages to me.

The impact points are pretty much a give-away. However, once the hardboard has been exposed like that, that sucker will swell up and become further damaged.

That looks like masonite to me not hardi-plank I would replace the siding. The siding specialist that I have taken a class from said if any portion of a piece of siding is damaged then that piece is considered damaged and should be replaced.

It's interesting because the home is only 8 years old. The roof would have been installed before the siding and yet there is damage at cut sections above the roof.
