Concur with Nick in that if the connector you're referring to is a gas appliance flue vent connector I would suspect condensate debris. Not uncommon.

What I think Richard P. is meaning to ask is (I'm changing his sentence around and adding a couple of words): just wondering about a pile of white stuff about a inch high under a connector and what that stuff is?

Now, though ... What type of "connector" are you referring to?

Electrical - plumbing - gas vent ... ????

It could very well be white soot caused by equipment underfiring and venting related issues.

It is common to run into but not acceptable to leave in that condition.

That pic that Jerry M posted has some serious issues going on.

Old drug house. They used to stash there nose stuff in the vent pipe.
