What do they mean by "heated up a metal thimble in the wall"?

Brian, this sounds like the classic "pie plate" cover in the wall where an old unused flue is covered with a metal disc but not filled with cement. An appliance sharing this flue at a lower level sends heat into this unused thimble until the combustible wall ignites. Often, these things get covered with drywall and wallpaper. You wouldn't know it was there unless you video scanned the chimney.
