Is an exhaust fan allowed in the ceiling of a garage with a living space above it?:confused:

Yes, if it is ducted to the exterior and the duct is 26 gauge steel or greater, then it should comply with 309.1.1. as long as it has proper firestop caulking, etc. Also, I guess it could depend on local regulations as well.

Scott: It appeared to be a normal bathroom exhaust fan. I could not verify the duct type.

It would need 26 gage duct as Scott said, and I doubt that it has it. It would also need a metal exhaust hood through the exterior wall, not a plastic one which would melt and allow the duct to fall free from the exterior wall. (Because all of the plastic ones I've seen have cheapo aluminum duct the plastic cap is connected to.)

I would bet that it is not what it needs to be! I would just tell them what it should be and that you can't confirm what it is.
