Recently I have been asked about doing Radon testing.
I live and do my inspections in southeast Florida.
Is radon testing something that my fellow inspectors are doing in the southeast area here in Florida? I am located in Broward county.

Mark,

I used to live down there, and, when all the hullabaloo about radon came up back in the 1990s (forgot just when) many of us decided to get our radon certifications.

Several of us thought about it more and decided not to, while a few others went ahead and got theirs.

I don't know of anyone who made enough to offset the annual costs for maintaining the certifications. One person I know became a mitigation contractor and some other things too. As I recall, though, he did not do enough with it to make money at it, just basically paid for his costs in maintaining everything - not sure that he still maintains everything as I retired and moved away 3 years ago.

Click here ( EPA Map of Radon Zones | Radon | US EPA (http://www.epa.gov/radon/zonemap.html) ) to go to a radon level map, select Florida from the state map selection right above the overall map, click on the 'click here' button, and you will see that Broward and Palm Beach are very low in radon, and Miami-Dade is a little higher.

If you are getting enough calls for it, go for it, but few people wanted radon testing down there once it was apparent that the risk was low and that most testing showed it was under the limits, in which case it was 'why did I spend my money on this, you should have told me the likelihood of radon being high was this limited'.

Milton, do you make any money at it in a zone with such low potential?
