I have seen lots of notched wood beams but this is the first time I have seen a concrete beam. Notch was more than 20% of depth and there is a crack to the left of the notch. Owner was there and claimed the PO did it but the cut looked pretty fresh to me.

I doubt there is a "notching and boring table" for concrete beams, in the IRC anyway.

That's not good.

See those two rust bulls-eyes? Those are the ends of the reinforcing steel which was cut in two.

(Okay, the photo has the garage door track hiding where those two bulls-eyes would be, but a concrete beam *IS* going to have reinforcement in it and they would be cut in a notch like that.)

A structural engineer needs to design appropriate repairs for that.

Gotta admit, I have never seen one of those installed. Curious on how well they work and how well they hold up. Looks like a good idea.

I have seen a few of them on new homes. They work well and they are very quiet. I don't know how well they hold up since I have only seen new ones.
