hey Paul, good to see you on here!

Got any tips on how to fix hairline cracks in smooth sheetrock ceilings?

The first thing to do is figure out why the cracks are there. ie: not secured properly-are the cracks straight or irregular?

Seems to be in areas where LVL beams and regular lumber are present.
Straight line cracks, sheetrock installed with all screws, no nails.
One level house, no heavy items in attic. Cracks are only 3-4 feet long.

Beams are oversized, framing is top notch, house is built like a fortress and exceeds code. No trusses.

Cracks are only 3-4 feet long.

Sounds like the butt joints are cracking. Is the drywall hung on furring strips 16"oc or truss's 24"oc? 1/2" or 5/8" drywall?

Talk to us about Chinese Drywall. Did you hang any? Did it smell funny when going up? Any callbacks?

Thanks.

Welcome Paul Peck
I am also wondering about chinese drywall. I had a client ask me about it the other day. I looked at the back of the installed drywall from the garage attic and the crawlspace and could see the manf. date and the letters GP which i believe is Georgia Pacific. The chinese drywall i believe has a ATSM number and is Stamped China on the back. Any info on how to reconized this stuff would be great. Thanks Mark Northrup

Paul,

Even though you discounted our being relatives before being questioned about it, for you protection, I guess ... :) ... Welcome to THE inspectors board. :D

Mind if I use those photos? I am trying to collect photos showing samples of the Chinese drywall.

Curious, with that Knauf kraft paper backed insulation ... any known problems with it?

Cannot believe guys are installing gypsum board using NAILS ... I can tell you this though, that right edge of the gypsum board is not aligned with that truss/rafter, indicating that SOMETHING *is not square*.

I am just trying to get over tacking up that drywall with a hammer and nails. We stopped even tacking the board up with nails decades ago. Screw gun in hand, flip the sheet up, grab a screw and sink it in and on to the next side.

Between residential and commercial construction and inspecting I had a drywall business while for ever. Hung so many square feet of board between me and who ever was working for or with me I would not even want to try to figure the footage.

Just curious.

Curious, with that Knauf kraft paper backed insulation ... any known problems with it? No. I haven't. But interesting none the less.

Another Knauf product (insulation) ... likely has nothing to do with the drywall problems. This is a highly rated product and I've seen used in many 'high dollar' homes.

Knauf Jet Stream 73.3 Blowing Wool (http://www.knaufusa.com/products/building_insulation/residential_insulation/knauf_jet_stream_blowing_wool.aspx)
