The flat roof I inspected today had quite a few pennies that looked deliberately placed. Is this some kind of lucky charm?

John: Could be, or Juan had a hole in his pocket.;)

Maybe some form of anode to neutralize acid rain

or

Makeshift lighting arrestors

or

wear indicators - like built into rubber tires

......lol

Were they all the same date? Possibly an indicator of when the roof was last coated.

I've seen similar use of coins on window sills and door frames as part of a Chinese custom for good luck/keep away evil spirits etc. Feng Swei?

Maybe its one of those pennies from heaven we've all heard about. I'm sure that kind of fall would create some heat on the coin and therefore make it stick in to the roof covering.

Or maybe someone tossed it out the space station?:D

They were most likely used to retard the growth of moss or fungus. Like running a copper wire across a comp roof to do the same thing. Moss and fungus usually grow on roofs where tree branches overhang and block the sun.

I have to go with the anti-fungal answer, sans Juan.
