100 year old house with some knob & tube wiring. Not sure but this connection to the door bell xfmr doesn't look right? Shoudn't it go into a box?

Wayne, that is the primary wire at my foot. 110v
and Billy, thats not Vermiculite it's cellulose, guess the pic leaves a little to be desired.

I wouldn't want that in my attic or in my client's either.
It doesn't look like a 100 yr old tranny. Any add-ons must be in a j-box, because soldering K&T in an attic is a lost art.

anything 50 volts or less no box needed
anything over 50 volts a box is needed

That pic, BTW, is a great illustration of why I will NOT go wading through retrofit loose fill insulation in older homes - you never know what's down there...

I hope that a note was made that K&T is not to be insulated around in your report.

Might not be 100 but I bet it's every bit of 50!

I should clarify this, the connections to the original 120 v K&T wiring should be in a J-box, if they were added later, ie, not properly soldered and taped. There is no need for the transformer itself to be in a box, it is already in a too hot location in that attic. :)
The insulation makes the whole situation unsafe, so you are correct to call for an electrician's input.
