Shingles short of drip edge

I think that they simply mis-measured. Had they taken the time before they started at the ridge they would have been just right by the time they got down to the fascia.

Removing gutters with a leaf shield system which was incorrectly installed with the shingles in the first place?

Seriously, some clueless DIY or "handyman" hacking...possibly someone slapped up a layer of facia over the existing or closing what wasn't and slipping some sheet metal under the shingles overtop the facia to hide it.

Believe it or not, there are some builders who who use a top-down technique. I actually saw it on This-Old-House, used by Silva Brothers on a barn, maybe 10 years ago. They don't use it all of the time. I think they were just demonstrating that it was one possible technique. It makes installing and removing roof brackets easier, and causes less damahge to the shingle that have been installed. Could be that they tried that here, and the ridge was not parallel to the eave.

Another possibility is that they installed the eave drip edge and rake drip edge after teh roof had been shingles, but I'd guess they used the top-down tecghnique.

Check the laps in pic1. Sloppy work is the right guess. Too scared to hang out over the edge for the first course, then they patched it with drip edge flashing nailed through the fascia.

The 1st photo shows an improper overlap on the 4th and 5th course. The 2nd photo shows improper offset on approximately the middle courses at the rake edge. The hold back (lacks 1/2 inch to #/4 inch overhang) will allow capillary water movement.
All in all what caused this was not reading the instructions on the package ,or in ARMA and the NRCA manuels.If I see this I look very closely at the nailing pattern as well as flashinfg details. If the installer can not do the easy stuff , look out for the details.
It is typical homeowner or handyman installation.

Okay ... click on the 'User CP' link at the left of the top menu bar, just below the Inspection News logo.

Now, under 'Control Panel', click 'Edit Options'.

Now scroll all the way to the bottom to 'Miscellaneous Options', you will find two selectable option boxes, the top one giving you a choice between
- Basic Editor - A simple text box
- Standard Editor - Extra formating controls
- Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing (WYSIWYG - pronounced 'whizzywig' - stands for 'What You See Is What You Get')

With the Enhanced Interface, the icons will be in a vertical column on the right side of the message box.

Wherever your typing cursor is flashing when you click on an icon is where the icon will be inserted.
