Never saw one of these before. I am assuming it is an old smoke detector but what is the red tab for that says, "rewind"
Wind up, no batterys? HUH?
Anyone seen one of these?

Yep, my brother had a short stint selling those things.
Not a smoke detector, a heat detector with a wind-up bell and a high temperature link or fuse.

Heat detector, likley a "MasterGuard", from the mid 70's.

I remember the Masterguard sales people coming by my home back in the early 80's.

The guy set up a projector that played a horrible presentation showing deaths that had occured in home fires. The thing would scare the pants off of anyone and you'd be buying these alarms immediately to save your loved ones.

They were extremely expensive.

I did not purchase them.

I remember when my Dad tried to sell those back in the late 70's. He quit that when he realized that he couldn't make money at it then started selling Amway. Sometimes I seriously wonder about my gene pool.

So when you hear the bell. Your A$$ is on fire correct? Should be expensive. I should put one on my tool belt.

You have to realize this is a mechanical device with some heft to it as I remember, cost more to make. Kind of like back in the days when a watch cost more than 20 bucks and didn't take batteries (and back then, $20 was worth much more than today.)
I figure it was like Amway where everybody along the way made a little off the deal. The only reason I remember them was my brother came home and tried to sell dad on the deal... He didn't buy and my brother did not keep selling them for long!
