What is this?
It appeared disconnected in the crawlspace. I have been doing inspections for almost 3 years and have never seen this one before.
The house was built in 1928. Any help?

Looks like an old "Octapus". May have been a coal or oil fired gravity furnace.

That looked just like the one in my 1st house. It was probably a old coal gravity furnace. Mine was converted to gas and had a standing pilot that would cook 10 hot dogs with the amount of heat it put off .

Here's an oil-fired one from a fixer home last week.

It looks like an old droid from a galaxy far away.

Richard, your picture looks like a Beckett burner with a cad cell. Memories working on them are flooding my mind.

Richard,

I hope that you pointed the possible asbestos containing insulation.

Not sure Kevin. It hadn't been serviced since 1997 and would only run for about a minute before tripping the reset button. My clients were rapidly losing interest in this place...one of the worst I've ever done. They walked...no, make that ran.

Richard,

I hope that you pointed the possible asbestos containing insulation.

The white stuff all over the ducts? Yes Jon, kind of hard to miss that!
