Found this at an inspection today, in a 1923 home. has Union on it and the dial does nothing anymore. Just wondering what it could be for. thanks for your input.

Looks to me like a control for an electric heater. Did the house have electric heat at one time?

Maybe a timer for a whole house fan. Or what Gunnar said

Those are for those cheap metal bladed ceiling fans (usually 3 bladed ceiling fans).

Some are 'off' at each end and 1-2-3-4 speed settings in between, some were 'off-1-2-3-4-5' - that one looks like an 'off-1-2-3-4-5' type.

I kinda think he was talking about Unions such as the Auto Union. Not the Nort/South thing.....I Think.

Auto Union?

Those were some monstorous race cars with huge engines, 12 liter as I recall.

The Auddi is, if I recall correctly, the decendent of Auto Union.
