Well with my body collapsing, the down turn in the economy, I finally bit the bullet and went over and joined the enemy.
Now I am one of those.............AHJ, yeah thats right I said it, I took a full time job as a CEO/BI/Fire Marshall/Civil Defense Director.
After 17 years of working for myself, and now a public servent.
Oh well, life goes on.

Same here.

The AHJ *IS NOT THE ENEMY*. They are our friends, and we should make them such.

A person I worked with for years doing HIs took a job with the county a few years ago and is doing great. After doing HIs you have a unique perspective of seeing how things actually perform and you have better people skills than a civil servant who's been stuck in an office all his life.

Congrats.... you'll do great at it.

I punched a clock once.

Then they told me to never come back and they'd mail my final check.

I may have to switch sides here pretty soon. I can't take it anymore, watching these real estate agents making 100k commisions and they are not that bright.

Most of the agents in my area are not doing very well... some are OK But others not so good.

Ron,
It's a lot different here. Most anywhere else I would not even consider it, but the average home in park city is over a million dollars. I did two inspections for a lady last week who just sold a 6 million and 4 million dollar home. That's would be nice to spend that:)

Lee, we'll all be government workers sooner or later, right.

Either that, or dependents. I think you'll be on the better side of things.

Welcome to the dark side! You'll find things are a lot of the same stuff but yet quite different at the same time. Only thing to remember it's not you're opinion any more but what the code was at the time the structure was built.

You'll do fine! Keep your nose clean, go by the book, and you won't get in too much trouble.

you won't get in too much trouble.

WC: He cannot possibly get into trouble, since AHJs are immune to litigation. How else do you suppose the condition of the nation's housing stock has been reduced to its current shabby state?:D

The current shabby state of the housing stock don't have a thing to do with getting in trouble. It's trying to require things that are not regulated by the code. Remember........HI's can point out things that are not in the code......AHJ's must go by the code "as written".

AHJ inspectors requires a remodeling contractor to install arc faults where not required......contractor goes to AHJ's inspectors boss.....AHJ inspector gets written up for making up crapola not required by the code! Or calls councilman...councilman contacts city manager....city manager.....wel it may get ugly!

That's why I say

Politics is also a BIG TROUBLE maker!!!

Besides shabby houses do not exist in my jurisdiction....well not since I've came on board anyway.........other jurisdictions....Yep!! Totally agree.

Which brings to mind a remodel I did for my mother about 8 years ago. Pier and beam....installed all the under floor plumbing....called for inspection.....inspector asked "Did you use purple primer?"....Uhhhh yes..."That's okay then, go ahead and cover it up!" ....True story!

That was in Azle Texas for those of you around the DFW area! So yes I know where you guys are coming from when you run down AHJ's.

That's why I said "Keep your nose clean, go by the book, and you won't get in too much trouble."

WC: FYI, Azle is pronounced just like the German word Esel which means donkey. Precisely what I think about the municipal folks there.:D

Well Lee......I must admit that the thought of someone esle paying the overhead, insurance, etc....etc.....etc... has crossed my mind a time or three. But at the end of the day I like being my own boss and treating people the way I feel they deserve to be treated. Hope it goes well for you.
