As much as I support the Obama administration, I must say that his recent nomination for an evangelical christian [sic] to head the NIH is confounding.

Well, Obama is a believer himself, so it's not surprising.
IMO, the question is: is he a scientist or a believer, first - is he was willing to entertain the possibility that he's wrong, and evaluate without prejudice funding for experiments that might produce results that undermine his beliefs?
If not, he's fit to lead a a prayer session in the oval office or speak the invocation at a congressional session, but not to advise either on scientific matters potentially conflicting with his religious beleifs.
