View Full Version : dryer gas flex connector too small?

No photo. Typical gas dryer has what looks like a 1/2 inch flex connector coming from a 3/4 hard pipe. I didn't even know they made a flex connector that small. Any help?

Ok, no doubt I've got my pipe sizes messed up. Not my forte, don't you know.
The hard pipe is your standard 1/2" black gas supply and there is a reducer to get it down to the small flex connector, which must be 3/8", I suppose.
Anyway, like I said, I've never seen a gas connector that small. I don't run dryers. I just look at the electric and gas and vent connections. Looked like your standard run-of-the-mill dryer.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The typical gas dryer needs 22,000 btu's. A 3/8" flex connector will supply enough gas.

FYI, to assess flex connector sizing, you need to know the ID and the length, then refer to a chart such as the link above.

John, we usually see those really skinny connectors only on gas log sets and usually no more than 18'.

The longest flex dormont makes is 6 foot. Even on natural gas it still delivers 23,100 btu's.

The longest flex dormont makes is 6 foot. Even on natural gas it still delivers 23,100 btu's.

Also on that page as a note to that table:

"Note: When using 0.2 water column pressure drop, capacity can be determined by multiplying the values above by 0.632 (for both natural and propane gas)."

3/8" x 72" = 14,599 at 0.2 pressure drop
3/8" x 60" = 15,736 at 0.2 pressure drop
3/8" x 48" = 17,885 at 0.2 pressure drop
3/8" x 36" = 21,108 at 0.2 pressure drop
3/8" x 30" = 23,004 at 0.2 pressure drop

Meaning that the connector would need to be no longer than 30" if 3/8" in size.

1/2" x 72" = 31,031 at 0.2 pressure drop

Meaning that the connector could be 72" if 1/2" in size.

Your right Jerry, the proper thing would to have gotten more info about the installation. I forgot about the note on the .2"wc drop and in worse case senario could have an effect. Thanks for the input, good call!
