View Full Version : Combustion Air Venting on Other Floors

What are the requirements when venting to adjacent space on another floor? A house has all of their gas appliances in the basement which is considered a confined space and does not meet the 50/1000 criteria. Can they vent to the upstairs living space with a grille on the upstairs door that seperates the basement from the living area? Should it be two grilles (one high - one low) or does that not apply since it's not on the same floor? The codes do not specifically state instructions when the adjacent space is on another floor.

Any help is appreciated. Thx.

I think you are talking about combustion air, correct? Venting would be exhaust gases. You want to install what is called fan in a can

Great suggestion Wayne!

If you start cutting holes from the basement area to the upper floor areas you could actually make an appliance that was operating safe turn unsafe very quickly.

Remember it's only a hole, it doesn't know which way the air should move. :D

Yes, it's to supply combustion air not venting. The fan in the can is interesting.

So if you could make an appliance that was operating safe turn unsafe very quickly by making holes to the upstairs then why wouldn't that be the case with holes going to the outside?

Holes going to the outside do the exact same thing.

They can be intakes or exhaust depending on the wind or pressure difference.

You have two kinds of makeup air (MUA)---
-the type required by codes
-the type that works

They are not the same.
