Have you ever seen a piece of waste cast iron split or leak after 40 years. A friend has a leak, told it was probably a crack in his 40 YO blue toilet. Plumber said it could possibly be a cracked piece of waste cast iron. How would you determine which it is ? He noticed the area under the toilet was wet when he was in the basement, I thought it might just be a new wax ring that's needed.

Much of the cast iron I've seen never made it 40 years without splitting or leaking.

Take the path of least resistance...
Replace the wax ring since it is cheap...unless you have to pay someone else to do it (it is still relatively cheap). Then if there are still signs of an active leak it may be the cast iron pipe. It can last many years but it is not predictable.
