I assume it goes by manufacturer but roughly how many feet long can a water heater exhaust vent pipe be assuming one elbow.

I believe its approx. 14 feet.

How long does it need to be to get to where it is going and terminate through the roof at the proper height and proper clearance from building openings, etc.

That is how long it needs to be.

The tables in the IRC go to 50 feet.

That's for direct vent power vented water heater, not a Type B gas vent.

The original question did not specify about which was being asked about - good expansion of the answers to beyond the normal thinking of Type B gas vents.

I guess my thinking was trapped in that box everyone talks about. :)

The water heater is not power vented. Thanks for all the info so far. I am going there today and will be able to upload a picture of this configuration.

Also manufacturer name and model number would be helpful as we may be able to find the installation instructions on the net for your query.
