I do it from outside the tub.

It's as you face the spout. In your case, it would be from inside the tub.

It's as you face the spout. In your case, it would be from inside the tub.

You address it from the users position - in the tub.

Note though, having the hot on the left *is not* a "code requirement", it is standard accepted practice and one which could result in burns if not followed ... and I would not want to the be defendant in that lawsuit.

Also, there are some imported (European) faucets which have hold and cold reversed as to the direction the handle turns, and as long as the permanent labeling/marking is correct they are allowed. At least I have found nothing which disallows them.

But again, *I* would not want to be the one listed as a defendant because someone got scalded from a "backward" faucet, even though the faucet was not actually "backward".

P2722.2 Hot water.

Fixture fittings and faucets that are supplied

with both hot and cold water shall be installed and
adjusted so that the left-hand side of thewater temperature control
represents the flow of hot water when facing the outlet.
Exception:


Shower and tub/shower mixing valves conforming

to ASSE 1016 or CSA B125, where the water temperature
control corresponds to the markings on the device.

I've found them both ways in past inspections. I'll consider the judgement of the arrangement from within the tub from now on.
