Is a strap, plate, or tie required at the end bearing and joint between the two beams? The place was built in 2008 and this is under a canopy entry. The column is anchored into a concrete footing. But as you can see they simply toe nailed the two together.

No requirement other than if one was specified in the original blueprints. Most likely the house was built without spec for details like that.
