View Full Version : Clues to finding buried oil tanks.

Most buried oil tanks in my area at least have been abandoned because of age. They've been abandoned because they're rusted out in most cases. Nobody wants to find one of these after they've bought a property.
Look for breather pipes coming out of the ground and double copper oil lines indicating a pump system. A tank beside the house will often have a new line to it, indicating a conversion to gravity feed.
I'm posting some pics of indicators that might help somebody discover a hidden tank. Good luck out there.

Good infomation John... don't not see that stuff in my area but it was used in at one time.

Add to that there may be a large brown (read bare earth) area where the fuel nozzel dripped or an unpainted silhouette on the wall.
Some owners will cut the old filler pipe just below the surface and infill. Beware!
