The membranes, under these "Living Roofs" or Green roofs, are the same ones that have been in use for years. So all they are doing is adding a layer of protection to the roofing membrane, a good thing. Toronto, Canada has made it mandatory that all new buildings have 20-50% Green roofing. I think a few US cities have the same by law. In any case, Are there problems with this kind of roof...yes, but not anymore than any other roofs, we still rely on roofers to install them. The Prairie grass roof, called extensive green roofing is growing light weigth growing medium of about 3"-6", it is not much diferent than a ballasted roof system or a roof top patio.

I guess they would have to put up a pretty heavy duty guard rail as well, but that would eliminate RH's worry about getting the lawn mowers up on the roof!
