Is there code that requires washing machines on the second floor (or not in the basement near the basement drain) be in a pan with a drain, or is it just good practice?

As far as I know only water heaters are required to be panned and drained to a basement or other space where it will be noticed but not do damage.

I'm not sure if it's code but I always suggest it if the room below it is finished.

To my knowledge there is no national model code requirement. That said, many local authorities require these pans. Most require the pans to be drained to the DWV system.

It is not code but is recommend .

There may not be a drain , but the pan will at least hold spillage.

Jon, Here we normally see them drained to the basement or slab floor drain, with an air gap between pipe and floor drain.

Ken -- thanks! I was just inspecting a townhome in Bloomington yesterday that had been remodeled and the new washer and dryer were in a closet on the second floor.

But yes - I normally find them in the basement.
