I can't tell if the chimney is supporting the liner or the liner is supporting the chimney!

I hope you didn't sneeze on that sucker John. Might have taken it down completely.

It's amazing that they built the chimney on the dividing or fire wall. No matter what they do it will crack and fail.

Standard old row home construction. There's a million of 'em.

John isn't exaggerating---there are a million of these in Philly. Old soft bricks with lime mortar either miissing or ruined by Portland cement, unlisted homemade improperly sized liners secured with electroplated Zip screws, blocked breaching, improper vent connectors, no MUA and the entire party wall is one big water storage device.

FYI, Philly L&I does NOT want permits pulled for chimney liners and does not want to be bothered by them. The HVAC guys rolll their own pipe and screw sections of rigid with ordinary screws that rust through so the sections fall apart. Some wil use 12" sections with two opposing screws with the sections swinging so it can swivel through offsets.

Correction:
rebuild chimney with SW grade hard fired solid brick and lime mortar then install properly sized & connected listed liner w/ listed termination and flash it properly into the roof. In Philly, flashing= roof cement over hot mopped plies and more roof cement or roof coating.

Also, it can be next to impossible to get up on these roofs with materials to work. I've started quoting Bilco hatches where there is no reasonable ladder access. Still have to hike up 3+ stories all day. Killer on the knees, then you get to find PPA gigged you with a parking ticket to boot.

Man I hate working in Philly!

Good thing there was no metal liner in there! :)
That one blew all the lids off the kitchen stove! :)
When everybody else is waiting for the next shoe to drop, in Philly, they're waiting for the next brick! :)
