Just curious how often you mention messy workmanship in panels. The pics are not the best I had to crop them, but you get the idea.

I've seen some proverbial rats nests in panels but unless there is something wrong, I don't write it up. However, I have written it up when the wires won't even stay inside the front of the box interior with the deadfront cover removed.

Given what I usually see, it would never occur to me to write those up as messy. It's all relative, I guess.

No code violation that I can see from pics.
Visually messy is not a hazard in most cases because; in most cases there really isn't sufficient room for a neat installation especially when the neutral/grounding busses are located at the top of the panel.

Whenever I encounter a real neat job, usually all the conductors are tie-rapped together, I make the installer cut em off and spread them out...making it more messy.
I really appreciate when the conductors are neatly cut exactly to length so that a bunch of wire nuts can be installed at the next service upgrade.

I will up the ante on this one. You should have seen the rest of the house.

It was classic "Deliverance meets Red Green"

Yes that one's a classic. Things went all to h3ll after he lost the screws to the deadfront.:)

I address violation and unsafe conditions..if I were to start addressing messy workmanship, I would need 10 hours on some inspections...

We probably all have some messy panel boxes, which seems to be the norm. So when I see a well kept panel (no code issues, no rust, etc,) I like to make a general comment as a good will jesture, like "well maintained panel box". It makes the owner "feel good" and the buyer is glad to have a good panel. ;)

If the wiring in the box is another indicator of amateur DIYitis with the electrical system,I have advised having a master electrician check and correct all wiring issues in the house as a safety precaution

I have seen a lot worse but I usually only write them up if I can't read the legend or if the panel is really hard to close after removing the front, or there is some other problem with the wiring.
