This didn't seem right at all.
Are you allowed to direct bury steel gas lines at the exterior?

This line ran from the front of the house to the rear and then through a stone retaining wall, and under a patio finally up into a gas grill..

In Florida, per NFPA, to bury a metal gas line it has to be protected from corrosion. Protection can be in the form of sleeving, factory coated, cathodic protection. Most here use pe gas pipe underground. They have a riser that transitions to coated pipe coming out of the ground or flexible type risers. Short answer is no bare metal in the ground. It should also be sleeved where it penetrates the foundation and floor.
