This is one of two pipes that are about 5 feet apart and about 20 to 30 feet away from a house built in 1972. Any ideas?

Looks like a pipe that has been driven into the ground, probably with a sledge hammer.

Could be with spacing like that. Only one sure way to findout and that involves a backhoe.

If it is from an oil tank, there may be some evidence of the abandoned lines that came into the basement or crawl space.

The town should have a plot plan with the location of any underground tanks on file. However this looks like an old fence post that was driven in.

Take a slender steel rod four feet long and probe the area.

Scott said it best.
NO WAY, NATA, NEVER say it's a clothes line or fence post, EVEN if it's got clothes or a fence on it.
