And what would you put there, if anything? It's well lit, so maybe a small statue or a tasteful fake plant? Insert sarcastic emoticon here.

What to put there? Guards and safety glass, after that a remote control window covering/privacy shade. What to call it? A Niche or alcove, perhaps a High-dive platform to broken neck for fire-fighters on search and rescue operation. Without safety glass and guard, it is an attractive but unsafe perch or ladder rest for cleaning, maintenance, of hanging light fixture/luminaire/chandellier.

Statute of your favorite false prophet?

Gosh, there are so many of them. It's hard to pick a favorite!

I would change out the chandolier for a disco ball and put a fulltime gogo dancer up there!:D

Now we're talking. She'd have to be in one of those cages, I think, to satisfy H.G.

And another thing, don't call me Shirley.

Egad! I got some on me!!

Go-go dancing, cages, guards. Men, I can tell you the trouser fit (regardless if the fitter/tailor marked for your dress direction) of the sixties were NOT comfortable if sitting in a club with go-go dancers or bunnies, cages or no cages.

Swap that luminaire for a swing and serve me a prime cut and you'd never get me off of those stairs (Ol' San Francisco in DFW area ... ahhh, great place it was ... may still be don't know) ;)

It needs a rail and a door. Sure, the space would still be mostly useless but it would be cute. (And the real estate agent can count it as floor space.)

And what would you put there, if anything?

I have seen a couple of these oversized plant shelfs, they were built to accommodate a christmas tree, but I see they forgot the switched receptacle on this one.:)

"Niche Nymph Receptor Shelf" has a nice ring to it, IMO.
