Is it acceptable to have the shingles in this valley cut on the smaller roof or should they be cut on the bigger roof?

Yesterday's valley at the roof of a "charming 1880's" $550K Chicago suburban "farmhouse".

The listing broker had been chatting up my clients and generally getting in the way, I was tempted to ask her if these were the "authentic original charming 1880's shingles"?
