I usually look under a sink before I turn on the faucet. When I do, I look at the disposal, and check the wire clamp among other things. I also note if there ISN'T a disposal.
So the house this morning does not have a disposal. I'm doing my thing and start checking outlets and switches. Get to a switch near the sink, and I hear a disposal. WTF?????? I look under the sink again, and there isn't a disposal.

I flip the switch again, and sure enough, I can hear a disposal. I start digging around under the sink and sure enough, there is the old disposal, tucked away in the back corner of the cabinet with a pile of crap covering it. Still operating...go figure.

Being rather anal about terminology, Disposall is G.E.s unit. The proper term for general use would be disposer. So there! :D

From Wikapedia:

A garbage disposal, garbage disposer, food waste disposal, food waste disposer, waste disposal unit, or garburator / garbarator (Canada (http://www.inspectionnews.net/wiki/Canadian_English)) is a device, usually electrically powered, installed under a kitchen (http://www.inspectionnews.net/wiki/Kitchen) sink (http://www.inspectionnews.net/wiki/Sink) between the sink's drain (http://www.inspectionnews.net/wiki/Drain_(plumbing)) and the trap (http://www.inspectionnews.net/wiki/Trap_(plumbing)) which shreds food waste into pieces small enough (generally less than 2 mm) to pass through plumbing

I reported what I saw. My clients were there and saw it. I told them it was a potential safety issue, and a fairly easy fix. They didn't seem all that worked up over it.

The house also had some Ultra Vent pipe on the HVAC unit. I found out the recall was modified slightly when one of the companies backed out of the deal according to CPSC.
