I have a question on a 16 foot horizontal run of normal galvanized flue pipe. There is a boost fan attached just above the water heater. The 16 foot of normal flue pipe running parallel with the floor joists and terminating on the exterior just below the deck on the rear of the home. This just can't be right? can it? Please help.

Who knows what you mean with your descriptions!

A picture MIGHT HELP with your lack of descriptive details.

Normal flue pipe? WTheck does THAT mean?

Single wall vent, B-vent, etc.

You SURE its galvanized steel, not SS?

Boost fan?

Horizontal, no rise at all?

BTW oil fired, NG fired, Propane fired??

Size/BTU/brand/description of water heater.

SUSPECT power assisted draft, Cat III, but who knows what you mean?

Are we to ASSUME this is not a diy insert overtop of a draft hood?

Are we to assume you aren't looking at an oil fired heater?

Details Man! Picture!

Ugh, and you write inspection reports??? and get $$$ for it?

Induced draft or pre-true power vent also possible (early-mid 90s).

Vintage of the WH would also help.

A.D., you caught me, yep, I sinned, I indulged:o . Can't pour it out, already poured it in, all 22 oz of it, hours ago.

geesh i just asked a simple question. didn't want an ass chewing. Im not at the house anymore. it is a natural gas fired, 40 gal. tank. it had a vent hood on the top of the wh with a fan attached about 2 feet above the fan. from there the vent went to the sub-floor and was turned horizontal. following the joists parallel to the exterior wall. it terminated on the exterior just below the deck. Had a hood similar to a gas fireplace on the exterior wall. thanks for the ass chewing though!

If that fan causes positive flue gas pressure, then it is illegal. If it power vents out the sidewall and is CAT I WH then it is illegal.

Thanks for the meetings list and open invite to Ass Chewers Anon. I'll consider it, still working on my Java 12-step program, one day at a time. ;)
