Are these shingles installed too far apart or is it just an odd shingle pattern?

Looks like over exposed to me. Were you able to lift a shingle up and see if there was any sealant under the tab?

No, they were all stuck down pretty good. The roof was around 10 years old.

I see an interrupted thick faux shadow line. Architectual shingle. No scale what was the exposure, did you measure it?

Looks normal to me. I agree, like an intentional faux shadow line.

I did not measure it.
The applique layer seemed to align ok, but it was just an odd look.

Are shadow lines common? Does anyone have an example from a manufacturer?

Another vote for: looks normal to me, and is a shadow line.

Here's an example of a similar (if not same) architectual shingle on the right, and a standard 3-tab on the left.

Owens Corning has a bunch of those "shadowed" architectural shingles:

I did not measure it.

Are shadow lines common?

Yes.

You'll find loads of examples. Type "Architectual Shingle" at your favorite web search engine (Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc.), I'm sure you'll find example links to manufacturer names you recognize.
