I found this on an inspection yesterday and even though it was a 110 degrees, I stood on the roof for 15 minutes not believing what I was seeing.

The weirdest thing ever !!!!

Ricky, my hat is off to you. You have unearthed the crown jewel of chimney gaffs. And I thought we had some wacky chimney stuff here in the Philadelphia area......well, we still do. But this is in another league entirely.

No railing on roof, no hearth extension.

Did you recommend a chimney sweep? ;)

Actually I told the buyer that the roof was not made for entertaining although the roof looked like it had a party of 50 on it the night before the inspection. (That was another cost he wasnt expecting)

I told him that for no reason should that be used as a fireplace, grill, or for any other reason that would require a fire to be built in that opening. I suggested that he should have it filled by a mason.

I suggested that he get the permits pulled to show that the addition was actually approved by the city structurally, electrically, and mechanically.

I never tell my clients to walk away from a property because only they can make those decisions in the end, but I sure do hope he was reading my eyes for his sake and I spent extra time on this topic with him just hoping he was getting it.

Maybe they are up there on the roof watching those beautiful sunsets or star gazing and grillin up a nice steak at the same time.
Its possible!

My guess is the original owner loves Christmas and every year there was an electric powered, fake fire in the fire place along with other Crhistmas stuff. See the two bolts to the right of the "fire place"; used to anchor Santa, deer, etc.

Imagine Santa's disappointment/amazement when he squeezes into that left chimney on a dark night (with only Rudolph's red light) and falls 3 feet and he's in! Then, in the dark, stumbling around looking for the Christmas tree....he falls off of the roof !! :D
