I am stumped with this one.

This basement ceiling is drywall and had these unusual markings all over it. The makings could only be seen well at an angle. I tested for moisture with my pin type moisture meter and it registered 10% at various areas and less at others.

The basement is half finished with carpet and paneling and the other half is unfinished. There was a dehumidifier going full bore at one area and I found one damp carpet area directly to the left of the dehumidifier, all other areas were just slightly damp (<10%) which is typical of this area.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Any chance they used this as a play room? Think of a ball bouncing off the ceiling... otherwise, no clue.

That's what I thought originally but the marks were over so much of the ceiling, it didn't seem possible.

Kinda looks like the ceiling in a Canadian basement after a season of indoor ball hockey!

may also be damaged before install, but sure looks like a rubber ball bounced all over it

Could you brush any of the spots off?

Now with the dehumidifier in action and damp floor I would most likely go ahead and say that I found what looks like mold growing on the drywall.

John,

That's one of the pictures you posted, with the balance and contrast adjusted to bring out detail obscured in the original.

Mold blooms. De-humidifier, wet carpet. Pretty definitely mold growth.
