Firestop Requirement

On a recent home inspection, the chimney inspector reported that "the required firestops have not been installed." Given the drawing attached, would love to hear the opinion from any experts or knowledgeable people whether 1) Firestops are actually required by code for this condition 2) Whether firestops would actually serve any practical/beneficial purpose in this situation.

84" + 45" + 24". Yep and Yep. Plan is NG. You don't say what/whose manufactured chimney material. See manufacturer's instructions. 2" in a metal framed plywood framed box? It will require support and restraint as well. Hire a pro.

Firestops are required by code at every floor level and where the flue enters the attic. Their purpose is to help prevent the spread of a fire from one floor to another and to the attic. without them a fire uses the chase as its own chimney, spreading the fire through the home much more quickly.

I can't tell much about firestops from you drawing but they are important and do serve a practical function. Get it fixed.

Jack, Fred is right. Flues, chases, elevator shafts, and stairways, all of which are vertical openings, act a flues during a fire. Hence, the importance of fire-stop and doors in or leading to stairwells. In a fire situation, doors are dampers.
