Is it acceptable to use dimensional shingles as peak shingles like pictured? I know that most shingle manufacturers offer specific peak shingles to match dimensional shingles however I am looking for a specific reference that says you can not do this.

Thanks.

You'll find it in the shingle manufacturer's installation instructions. I'm sure you saw the other problems with the shingle installation: Missing shingle, improper reveal, improper stagger and even one shingle laying on top of the one next to it.

In my opinion it's time for a new roof due to improper installation.

Joseph,
Really surprised by your question if in fact your are a general contractor or licensed. This is roofing 101.

No you can not use the dimensional shingle to cap ridge. Get a dimentional shingle and disect it to see exactly how it is made and you will see why they can not be used. There are shingles made for the ridge cap, some look like regular three tab and others are actualy preformed for ridge application.

I would also be looking for other issues since the installer has the shingle running crooked. I also see the shingle overlap. May have been a quick nail down and would look for the shingle not being offset correctly. If not a fast job, just a sloppy one. Installer cut some corners for sure.

Sorry that I did not answer your initial question. You will find the stipulation for the correct type of shingle and how to install in any manufactures installation instructions. It is not a code issue per say, it is a " to manufactures installation specifications " requirement.

Also, Vent is not installed correctly. Heaven knows what else.

Good luck

That single picture is a study of everything you don't want to see....

Recommend further evaluation/repair of complete roofing system, by a licensed roofing contractor, prior to close of escrow.

Be on the lookout for further sub-par workmanship on the other major elements of the house... You know the expression 'where there is there's smoke, there's fire'...

Looks like a home owner installed it themselves...oooorrrr.....could be some laid off banker trying his hand at a new career??? But sucking at both. Can't say anything good about this one, except that his manufacturers material warranty is still good!!!! But it's probably still going to fail way before it should.

Absolutely not. This entire roof installation is shoddy. I'd recommend an entire upgrade.
