View Full Version : When was attic fire separation first required?

Yesterdays duplex (side by side)town homes: initial structure was built in the early 1950s, a large addition was built in (looks to me like) the 70-80s. Convention party wall (CMUs) is visible in the crawl under the addition, but the attic above the addition is wide open across both units. Anyway, I've always assumed that the fire separation requirements go *way* back, but does anyone know how far?

Just for my edification, not knowing nuthin' 'bout construction, what's a "CMU"?

CMU = concrete masonry unit, aka concrete block.

This goes back to at least 1993. Got rid of my code books before then. And was not required on all construction in the beginning. Seems like it started with Patio homes and condos. Done allot of duplexes from the 80s that it is was not required. Done small Motels from the 90s and after that it was not required.
