I have a big horse barn and arena on tomorrow's inspection. What are things I should be on the lookout for? I assume GFCI for receptacles, wire in conduit. What else might come up?

GFCI on all outlets, fans and lights are the norm in my area.

All electrical lines should be protected in conduit.

Floor drains have a catch basin that can be cleaned. Look for clogged drains.

Concrete below stalls or dirt.

Backflow preventer on water supply line.

That's about all I can think of that easily might be overlooked.

What's a "turn out pen". She said there were 12 or 13 of these, but I had no idea what she was talking about. I know I can sort it out when I get there, but it'll look like I know what I'm talking about if I know what I'm looking at. This should be fun.

Backflow preventers... I might have missed that, but I can see why they would be needed at the barn.

Jim,

Your usual structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing.

Some of these can get very elaborate with photo voltaic roofing and under floor hydronic heating and cooling.

You may be surprised and then again it may just be a barn.

Turn out, as the name implies is a larger open air pen just outside the stall(s) where the horses are turned out for some fresh air and sunshine. May or may not be individual or covered.

Good luck!

First Rule: Don't wear your good shoes! ;)

Even if wiring is in conduit, it should not be accessible to a horse. They'll bite or chew on anything. I've seen horse rip conduit off the walls like its nothing.
