I receive many sales pitches throughout the year from website design and SEO companies who want to get their hands on my site and "improve" it. I'm on the 1st page of Google for most major keyword searches in PA and what I have works fine and gets me business. Here is the latest pitch I received from a web designer via e-mail. My favorite part is where he offers his unsolicited opinion on the appearance and organization of my site. And he thinks saying things like this will get him work? The last thing I'm doing is giving anybody access to my site which could negatively affect it's ranking.

I am a freelance graphic designer and real estate agent.
I was looking at your website and although it has tons of great information, it seems a bit disorganized and the graphics are not all that pleasant.
I would be happy to re-design your site to make it more graphically appearing and organized.
The cost would be approximately $500 to do that.

I'd reply back something like this:

Dear Mr Web Designer,
Thank you for your opinion of my website. However I regret to inform you that I will not be needing to use your services as I am quite happy with the results I am getting as it is. You might check into this site though...I hear they are a little disorganized and have unpleasant graphics as well.
