I made an inspection yesterday and the snow had just melted off this roof. Is this a poor installation or it OK for the shingles to raise or curl a little bit? There appears to b no pattern with the shingles. I'm not a roofer but I didn't see any leaks from in the attic.

Old roof or new roof?

From the "tar" smeared on the vent pipe I am guessing old roof. If it is an older roof, shingles curling is a sign the roof is nearing the end of its life, if its a new roof the raised shingles have not had a chance to seal because of the cold weather. Looking at the long shadows from the vent pipes, raised/curling may not be as bad as it appears, the angle of the sun and shadows can make things look worse than they are.

That said, I do not see anything in the pictures that would indicate a poor installation.......unless the roofers sealed the pipe collar.

I believe the roof is about 5 yrs old. I noticed the vent pipe as well. I have a standard statement I use on every report in regards to flashing and sealing all roof penetrations.

Look up "architectual shingles", "shangles". It is not unusual for multi-layered laminated shingles to have differing overall "thickness" profiles or laminated plys, nor to appear somewhat "random" in their installed pattern, in fact it is often just that "non pattern" appearance which is what is desired and intentionally desired in other than a standard 3-tab composition roofing material.

I do not see the curling, improper installation, or any signs of delamination that you suggest when I expand your two photos.

Are we to presume the structure is older than 5 years?

I cannot tell if the irregular darkness on the apparent plumbing stack vent is "roofing goop", was wrapped, for example with plumbers tape, duct seal, or other, to protect it from abbrasion/movement damage when expanding or contracting (mostly lengthwise) due to temperature changes, or if the PVC was painted at one time a darker, less contrasting to the roofing materials, color and is delaminating everywhere except near the boot/colar base.

That's what I was thinking too... I looked at the pics to check for C drip but the gutter is in the the way.
