They were at a house that has a septic system. It smelled like WOW...:eek: when you get close to them.

Air pumps for an aerobic system.
Never smelled any offensive odors, maybe you have a broken line or unsealed conduit pushing septic air back. These are supposed to pump air into the tanks to aide in decomposition of solids. Almost always used with a system designed to have chlorine introduced in the final tank to disinfect the effluent that then goes to an above ground emitter (sprinkler) head.

I've heard great things about those systems, but the air back up was always a worry to me.
