OK, I'm on a roll with insulation ID, I know.

I've never seen this before in my life. It is lightweight, white, granules of varying sizes. If you pick up a granule and crush it between your fingers, it reminds me of baking soda.

I thought it might be vermiculite, but I didn't think it would turn to powder when crushed.

It looks to be the original insulation and then later, the fiberglass was blown over the top. House was built in 1978.

Thanks for your help.

Vermiculite is tan and usually square granules of varying size. I'm guessing pearlite, more "styrofoam" feeling.

Is it a hazard?

I did a quick search on perlite. I'm fairly certain that is what I saw. Thanks Benjamin. Are we related?? :D

Probably not. You must be the smart one.
