What kind of ridged pipe (air duct) do you suppose this is (or call it).
It is running from the gas heater (air distribution) in the basement to the an upstairs room that is on a concrete slab. Home built 1970. I don't want to say the "A" word if I don't need to. It sounds like a clay tile pipe when you "rap" on it.http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/10th87/SDC10998.jpg

Looks like transite, which is an asbestos containing product.

Thanks Scott,
Thats what I was thinking but I couldn't remember what it was called or if it did contain Asbestos. I remember seeing this years ago used for sewer pipe. I will be reporting it as such. I am guessing that all the other ducts under the slab is this way, probably several hundred feet.

Could be, with in slab ductwork it was common to use transite or similar cementitious type products.

Transite is a trade name.
It is actually called asbestos-cement.

Actually transite pipe started out as a trade name "Transite" made by Johns-Manville, but morphed into a generic term for the pipe even though it was made by different companies. The new "transite" pipe does not contain asbestos by the way.

So Larry
I would never tell your customer the "A" word unless you have test results.
I would say you recommend it be tested for the "A" word.

Kind of like Dryvit for EIFS; Kleenex for tissue; Romex for NM cable!

Agree! That is the way I have worded the report. So, I gave them a link to do more investigation (http://www.inspectapedia.com/sickhouse/asbestoslookF.htm) of the product ...This is a home were "I am earning my money". Also has a "Zensco" Elec-Panel...and no ground to recepticals... and a roof system that needs beefed up. (sags)
I'm getting an 'invaluable' education on this one...at least that is how I keep smiling.:)

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then i guess we need a 'qualified ornithologist' to tell us it's a duck.

I see old steam pipe insulation all the time, and state it's asbestos. No need for testing.

A house built in 1970 with ungrounded outlets?
